Hitchcock is deliberate with The Birds. He introduces the characters Daniels Brenner in the film long before any activity. This increases the tension. Evan Hunter - better known as Ed McBain - adapted this screenplay, originally the work of Daphne Du Maurier, into the popular film. Hitchcock employed electronic sound effects instead of musical scores to great effect. Hitchcock utilized research in the preparation for the film which focuses on an eerie real-life assault of Shearwaters with a haze of smoke in Capitola (California) from 1961. The theory was that diatom poisoning caused the extreme aggression of the birds following their consumption of anchovies.
